Ten on Tuesday #110

15 Dec

Yes, I know it’s not Tuesday. I’m a little behind. :P

Hosted by Roots & Rings.

1. How do you eat your eggs?
I don’t eat eggs, actually. Never liked them as a kid but haven’t tried them again now that I’m older. I don’t mind them IN things though—obviously the best things have eggs in them… like waffles and cupcakes!

2. Do you volunteer?
Yes, I do! I volunteer at the San Francisco Center for the Book, which is a center that promotes book arts and letterpress! They have classes/workshops where you can learn to make your own books or use a letterpress. I volunteer at events and sometimes on Saturdays to man their front desk. (more…)

Ten on Tuesday #109

6 Dec

This is a meme from Roots & Rings and I was inspired to do it via Allison. I’ve been getting the urge to blog more lately so I’m trying to take the first steps toward that goal. Probably blogging will be in my New Years resolutions again, like it was last year. Anyway, I digress. On to the questions! (more…)

Ten on Tuesday #64

25 Jan

From Roots & Rings, following Allison’s lead.

1. Do you decorate for Valentine’s day?
No, that seems kinda silly. I do, however, plan to bake cupcakes.

2. Does your desktop have a picture or computer graphic? Is it organized?
My desktop uses a “wallpaper,” I don’t know why but I never liked the term “computer graphic.” It is organized because it has nothing on it but mounted disks!

3. Do you use a paper planner, electric planner or no planner at all?
I use my iPhone and I have a little notebook that I carry around in my purse for miscellaneous notations.

4. Do you change purses or bags often or stick with a good thing?
For normal days I use the same bag every day, and every so often (maybe every 6 months to a year) I get a new bag to replace it with. If I’m going out or doing something specific I may change bags for the occasion.

5. What’s your favorite YouTube Video?
Uhhh… hard choice!

6. Do you use Turbo Tax or a real person to pay your taxes?
I’ve never used Turbo Tax, my mom always brought my tax papers to her tax-guy. I may try it this year, though, since I’m living in across the country now!

7. How many states have you set foot (or tire) in? Which ones?
Let’s see… New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, California.

So that’s 18, not sure if I missed any. I’ve also been through the airports in Texas & Arizona.

8. How many countries have you been in? Which ones?
I have been to Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, & England. So 6 if you include the US. I’ve also been through the airport in Germany.

9. How many pillows are in your house (sleeping or decorative)?
Two on the couch that are decorative, two on the bed, and two extras for when guests visit. So 8.

10. How cold is too cold for flip flops?
Anything below 70 degrees I think is too cold for flip flops. I only really wear flip flops when it’s up around 80.

Diabetes Meme

5 Nov

Saw this on Allison’s site a while ago and never filled it out. I figured that today, since I’m home sick and bored, would be a good day to do so. I apologize for the fact that I have no idea what the original source is.

What type of diabetes do you have:
Type-1, which used to be called “Juvenille-Onset Diabetes” but I think that term is depreciated now.

When were you diagnosed:
October 9, 1999. It was 4 days before my 12th birthday! (Thanks for that early birthday present, mother nature.)

What’s your current blood sugar:
I literally just pulled out my glucose meter to check this. It’s 270 mg/dL, probably because I’m sick.

What kind of meter do you use:
OneTouch UltraLink, it’s the one that “communicates” with my insulin pump. (“Communicates” meaning it sends my readings to the pump so I don’t have to type them in, and that’s it.)

How many times a day do you test your blood sugar:
I average twice a day, but I know I should be doing it more like 5 or 6 times. I’m really lazy when it comes to testing but I’m trying to get better at it.

What’s a “high” number for you:
Anything over 200 mg/dL I consider “high” and I correct to 120 mg/dL.

What do you consider “low”:
Anything under 70 mg/dL. Under 80 is when I start getting symptoms, but under 70 is when they start becoming really apparent.

What’s your favorite low blood sugar reaction treater:
I love fruit punch glucose tablets, and I keep a roll of them on me at all times. Sometimes, for a really low blood sugar or if it’s before bed, I also eat a spoonful of peanut butter.

Describe your dream endo:
Female, a fellow type-1 diabetic, well-educated, familiar with the latest technologies available, and easy-going/friendly.

What’s your biggest diabetes achievement:
Living, of course!

What’s your biggest diabetes-related fear:
Having complications related to my eyesight—my field of work is graphic design so I depend heavily on my eyes to do my job.

Who’s on your support team:
My mom, my brother (a fellow type-1 diabetic himself), my boyfriend (he still needs to learn more, but he’s been great so far), and hopefully whoever my new endocrinologist ends up being (I have yet to find one in SF yet).

Do you think there will be a cure in your lifetime:
I highly doubt it, but I’m trying to be optimistic for future generations.

What is a “cure” to you:
To quote Allison: “A complete biological reversal of Diabetes.” I will also add, in the case of pancreas transplants, that my ideal cure would not include pills to prevent my body from rejecting a new organ.

The most annoying thing people say to you about your diabetes is:
I often get asked if my pump is a beeper, which seems silly to me. Though once I got asked if it was a new, unreleased iPod (which made me laugh). But I’d have to say that the most annoying thing to me is the misconceptions people have about Diabetics and how most of those misconceptions are related to Type-2. People like Dr. Oz going on Oprah and using a type-1 Diabetic with severe complications (due to the fact that she didn’t take care of herself) to scare type-2 Diabetics into eating better and exerciseing while also attempting to convince them that Diabetes is reversible (trust me when I say it’s not) DOES NOT help these misconceptions.

What is the most common misconception about diabetes:
This list could go on and on and on, but here are my least favorite:
1) Diabetes is reversible
2) Type-1 Diabetes is the “bad kind.”
3) It’s caused by eating too much sugar.

If you could say one thing to your pancreas, what would it be:
Why’d you have to go and let my cells beat each other up? That’s not cool.

Fill-in-the-Blank: Hair

5 Nov

I was inspired to do this by Allison, and even though I’m not one to post memes I found this one to be intriguing.

Fill in the Blank Friday: Hair

1. My last haircut was too long ago, over a year. I’m definitely, definitely due for one.

2. My most daring hair moment was when I decided to get a pixie haircut, but it didn’t quite go as planned. I was 13.

3. A hairstyle I’d never be brave enough to try is dreadlocks, ick!

4. I’ve always dreamt of being a (blonde, brunette or redhead) … Neither, actually. I am a natural redhead and I LOVE my color. Wouldn’t change it for the world.

5. My go-to hair do is parted on the right side with top layer pulled back and secured with a hair clip. I put in a little bit of gel to old my curls and some conditioning spray, and that’s it!

6. My biggest hair disaster was that time I got the pixie cut… the hair stylist my grandma took me too did not do what I asked her to, and ended up cutting my hair shorter on one side than the other, and then just brushed my hair into a side part so I wouldn’t notice! I was pissed. I had to wait for it to grow out a bit (2-3 weeks) before going to get it fixed. Sad thing is I had to start high school with this haircut. :(

7. A hairstyle I am dying to try is something a little more daring than what I usually do, maybe with braids (but I’m terrible at braiding).

8. My best hair day was the day of my first Ouidad haircut. It’s a salon in NY that only cuts curly hair, and they have a specific method for doing so.

9. The worst hairstyle I ever had was see question #6.

10. My hair is red, curly, and thin. It’s fairly soft, but the top layer always turns into a frizzy mess, which is why I often pull it back with a clip.
